What you NEED to know about the WA Battery Rebate.

what you need to know about the WA Battery Rebate

The Western Australian (WA) government has announced a significant battery rebate program as part of its commitment to renewable energy and reducing household electricity costs. This initiative aims to make battery storage systems more accessible to homeowners, enhancing energy independence and contributing to a sustainable future.

Overview of WA's Battery Rebate Program

The WA Labor government has allocated $387 million to the battery rebate program, with the goal of encouraging the adoption of battery storage systems among homeowners. This is expected to double the amount currently available of domestic battery storage and creating anticipated $1500 savings each year on power bills, giving some long-term cost of living relief. This investment is expected to provide rebates to approximately 19,000 to 25,000 households, based on current estimates. The program is scheduled to commence on 1st July 2025, and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until the allocated funds are exhausted.

Key Features:

  • WA Battery Rebate Amount: Up to $5,000 WA Battery Rebate will be available for Synergy Network customers and up to $7500 for Horizon Network customers

  • Means tested $10,000 interest free loan: Available to middle to low-income threshold homeowners, to help assist in the upfront cost of the solar batteries, they will have access to this loan, which can be paid back for up to 10 year.

  • $50 million Battery Manufacturing Program: This is designed to aid an increase in manufacturing in WA ensuring the benefits flow to more WA businesses, this will be administered via direct grants and low-interest loans.

  • Eligibility Criteria: While detailed eligibility requirements are pending, it is anticipated that the program will target owner-occupied residences with existing solar panel installations. Eligible batteries must meet Australian and WA Grid standards.

  • Application Process: Homeowners will likely need to apply through an online portal, providing proof of residence, existing solar installations, and compliance with technical standards. This is why it is crucial to install a hybrid ‘battery ready’ system now, prior to the rebate becoming available.

Comparison with Battery Rebate Programs in Other States

Several Australian states have implemented battery rebate programs to promote renewable energy adoption. Here's how WA's upcoming program compares:

South Australia:

  • Program: Home Battery Scheme (This is no longer available)

  • Rebate Amount: Up to $6,000 per household and was based on the capacity of the battery. The higher the capacity, the higher the rebate amount available.

  • Low-Interest Loans: These were provided by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.

  • Eligibility: The scheme was available to owner-occupied, tenanted, or Commonwealth concession card holder properties. Batteries had to be configured to optimise solar consumption. Higher rebates for low-income households

  • Outcome: High uptake with thousands of installations; contributed to increased energy independence and grid stability

Victoria:

  • Program: Solar Battery Loan Program

  • Loan Amount: Up to $8,800 for battery installations, the household taxable income must be k=less than $210,000 and the property valued must be under $3 million in order to apply for the loan. The loan is spread out over 4 years and monthly repayments start 30 days after the installation is approved.

  • Eligibility: Must be a Victorian resident, owner-occupied households with existing solar systems with an inverter capacity of at least 5kw. The battery must be on Victoria’s approved battery list and agree to participate in battery trials.

  • Outcome: Steady uptake; program aims to support the installation of 17,500 batteries over several years

New South Wales:

  • Program: The NSW Battery Rebate Program is designed to empower homes and small businesses to purchase batteries for their solar systems. This program is part of the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS).

  • Rebate Amount: A discount of $1,600-$2,400 off the cost of installing a battery, the exact amount depends on the battery’s size and capacity. Homeowners and businesses can receive a $250-$400 incentive for connecting their battery to a VPP. This incentive can be claimed twice, with at least three years between claims.

  • Eligibility: To access the rebate, you need to work with an accredited installer. As the installer will claim the discount on your behalf. It is therefore important to gain multiple quotes from different installers, as price varies from installer to installer.

  • Outcome: Moderate uptake; program focuses on making battery systems more affordable and stabilising the grid and reducing emissions.

Queensland:

  • Program: Queensland Battery Booster Program - which is now closed, and rebates are no longer available.

  • Rebate Amount: Up to $4,000 per household.

  • Eligibility: Must be a registered owner of a Queensland residential property. Have a household income of $180,000 or less, must have a solar PV system of 5kw or greater, and the battery must be at least 6 kWh.

  • Outcome: Positive response which closed quickly due to uptake of this rebate by homeowners. Once the homeowner received a rebate, the inspectorate (Global Sustainable Energy Solutions Pty Ltd (GSES) schedules a free and comprehensive inspection of the Battery Booster installation as well as a free safety check of the rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system.

Why Western Australians Should Act Now

Given the success and high demand for battery rebate programs in other states, it's crucial for WA homeowners to prepare in advance to take full advantage of the upcoming rebate. Here's why acting now is beneficial:

  • High Demand and Limited Rebates:

With only 19,000 to 25,000 rebates available and over 507,000 WA homes already equipped with solar panels, the demand is expected to surpass supply rapidly. Acting promptly ensures you secure a rebate before funds are depleted.

  • Avoid Installation Delays:

The anticipated surge in applications post-July 1st could lead to significant installation backlogs. By installing a hybrid inverter solar system now, you position yourself ahead of the rush, ensuring timely installation and connection.

  • Financial Benefits:

Installing a hybrid system now allows you to capitalize on current pricing and incentives, potentially avoiding price hikes due to increased demand. Additionally, being battery-ready means you can swiftly claim the rebate once it becomes available, maximizing your return on investment.

  • Enhanced Energy Independence:

With a battery-ready system, you can store excess solar energy, reducing reliance on the grid and shielding yourself from potential future energy price increases.

Conclusion

The WA Battery Rebate presents a valuable opportunity for homeowners to enhance their energy systems and achieve greater energy independence. However, with limited rebates and expected high demand, it's essential to act swiftly. By installing a hybrid inverter solar system now, you ensure you're prepared to claim the rebate promptly on 1st July, securing both financial and environmental benefits.
